Steve Jobs is going on medical leave
Steve Jobs, the CEO and president of Apple computers, has announced that he is taking medical leave from the company. According to an e-mail recently forwarded to the entire staff at Apple, Steve Jobs has stated that he would be taking a break from work so that he can concentrate on his health. Although he did mention that he would continue as a chief executive officer at Apple computers and that he would still be involved in any major decisions, daily activities of the business organization would be passed on to Tim Cook.

For those of you that do not know, Mr. Jobs was missing from Apple for nearly six months, between 2008 to 2009, as he had to undergo a liver transplant. This liver transplant was part of a series of diagnosis he had to undergo for cancer treatment. Although Steve Jobs was first diagnosed with cancer in 2004, he underwent surgery later that year to get rid of the tumor, but only last year did he opt for the liver transplant.
In the e-mail, Mr. Jobs stated that he would come back to work as soon as possible. “It is my humble request that everyone continues to work at Apple computers as they had done all year. The board of directors has been kind enough to grant me medical leave, allowing me to concentrate completely on my health. Although I shall still be involved in any major strategic decisions as CEO of the company, all daily handling of the activities would now be passed on to Tim Cook. The main reason that I have asked Tim Cook to become responsible for daily operations is simply because he is the chief operating officer at Apple and has done an excellent job for many years. In fact, there have been previous times when he has had to run the company because I was unable to come to work.”
The announcement came late on Monday, a public holiday in America due to the birth of Martin Luther King Jr. and as such, there was no activity on the stock market. In spite of this, there was a 6.4% decline in the shares of Apple Computer. However, at the end of 2010, Apple had grown 79% from the previous year’s closing.
Steve Jobs is an iconic figure at Apple computers and is one of the main reasons as to why the company has been so successful. He is widely being credited as the architect of some of the most creative innovations that have ever existed including the Apple iPhone, the iPad as well as the MacBook. He has pioneered the creation of Apple computers that are so slim that people want to purchase them. In fact, his Apple iPhone has allowed the company to gain massive revenue income and at one point even helped them become the most valued technology firm on Wall Street, thereby in the process overcoming the long-standing dominance of Microsoft. Although it has not been determined as to how much time Mr. Jobs will take off, we wish him all the best with his recovery.
